tips for shooting your videos

This page is designed to help guide you through the video elements for your self-recorded videos. These videos are intended to tell us about you, highlight your journey taking Calculus 1/Introduction to Math, and really show off your personality!

We would love for you to be as refreshed and energized as possible for this video—after all, your voice matters! This is your video, so please be camera-ready—hair and makeup done and dressed in your typical style.

This is a quick turnaround, so please send us your videos as soon as possible!

TIPS FOR SHOOTING A 4–5 MINUTE VIDEO ON YOUR PHONE:

Feel free to record the video on your phone or tablet. High resolution and video quality are key!

When shooting indoors, turn on as many lights as possible. Obviously, it’s very important for us to see you! Also, avoid backlighting, which can cause a silhouette. Make sure the lighting is on your face, not behind you. Feel free to use a ring light if you have one!

Have a clean background that is not too cluttered or filled with busy patterns. NO PLAIN WHITE WALLS! Acceptable backgrounds include: a library/study room, computer desk, car while documenting your journey to class, dorm room, outside your class before it starts, etc.

Please make sure your whole face and head are in the frame. Try to lean back so that you do not cut off the top of your head in the video.

If possible, please place your phone on a steady surface at eye level. You can use books to prop it up, a bookshelf, or a camera stand.

Please don’t edit your videos. If they are a little longer, we can make do! We want to see who you are and the raw footage.

AUDIO TIPS:

We want to hear everything you’re saying, so film in places where background noise is not a major distraction.

Please turn off all music or television in the background. (No interfering audio!)
